What is disc dog?

Disc dog is sport that can be played by any breed of dog, as long as the dog is healthy and it involves a disc (commonly known as a Frisbee), a human partner and a place to play.

The sport originated in the States in 1974 and quickly caught on across the country. Now you can find disc dog clubs and competitions all over the globe, from Japan, the Netherlands, the UK, Poland and Canada. Typical competitions of disc dog will offer categories such as Toss and Fetch, Furthest Catch and Freestyle. Several organizations formed with variations on the aforementioned categories, regarless the theme is the same, "have fun playing disc with your canine friend!"

Toss and Fetch

This divison or category is usually set up to allow beginners to compete as well as experts. Depending on the organization the field is measured out in 10 yard increments starting at 10 and its only limited by the size of the field. The handler must throw the disc down the field and the dog must catch to earn points towards placement or titles again depending on the hosting organization. The event is timed, anywhere from 60 to 90 seconds.

Freestyle

This division or category consists of timed choreographed routines to music where the dog and the handler showcase throws and tricks such as leaps, flips and vaults for discs! This category of disc dog requires training and flips, stalls (as seen in the photo on the left) and vaults should not be attempted without proper instruction to avoid injuring your dog.
